My First Senior Manager Role

When I was promoted to my first senior manager role, I started to act differently. I toned down bits of my personality. I started behaving how I felt someone in my position should behave.

Thankfully, I had an incredibly honest mentor. Chatting over coffee, he brought up how he’d noticed a change over the past month. I didn’t smile as much. I was always rushing. I even dressed differently.

‘The thing is Dan’; he said, ‘remember the reasons why you were promoted in the first place.’

That has stuck with me for years. I hope it sticks with you.

If you’ve recently been promoted or landed a new job, remember: it’s you they wanted! Not a more up-tight version of you.
